Description

Artist: The Middle East
Album: The Recordings Of The Middle East

The Middle East are a very unique band out of Townsville in Queensland, Australia. They use various influences from indie to post-rock to folk to ambient etc. and create a magical, hypnotic sound featuring varying instrumentation and gentle, addictive guitar hooks.

Their live shows have been describe as “surreal” and often create a very calm, space-like atmosphere.

In 2006 they released a split EP with local Cairns band Sleeping In Trains.

Ever since I saw The Middle East play live a couple of months back on Spunk's Singles Club tour with Leader Cheetah, I've been in love with this Townsville musical collective. Actually, scrap that... ever since I heard the song 'Blood'. That's when I knew there was something special about this band.

When we featured The Middle East on Unearthed, it was December last year and legend has it that the band had recently broken up, or were hiatus, or something like that. So when they were made the feature artist on Unearthed, they decided to regroup and start doing what they do best, which is make music. OK, so it mightn't have been Unearthed that was the catalyst for a reformation: it's most likely a combination of factors, but that would ruin my story, so let's just go with the moral "triple j saves the day". Deal?

The Middle East has recently unveiled another sublime gem replete with wistful melodies and shimmering vocal harmonies called 'The Darkest Side'. Perhaps not as radio-friendly as 'Blood' because it clocks in at over five minutes, 'The Darkest Side' is a great example of the talents of The Middle East. Everyone lends their voice to the song, taking it in turns to sing a verse each. The acoustic guitar rolls on like angels playing harps on clouds. It's a emotional, intimate song, and it's quite easy to believe that you're sitting in a room with the band, and the only person they're singing to is you.

Mark my words: The Middle East is one of the most promising bands of 2009.
